This paper engineering demo features Made in NYC member Dazzling Discoveries. Using just paper, tape and scissors, learn how to make your own table-top amusement park style games. This hands-on workshop will get you cutting, folding, connecting and building with paper in a matter of minutes. Transform ordinary paper into interactive games and while learning how to re-use and up-cycle supplies you already have. In order to make while you watch have printer paper or magazine pages, tape and scissors at the ready.

Taste the adventure with Moto Spirits Distillery, America’s first rice whiskey and jabuka distillery. During this virtual tasting, Marie Estrada, Moto’s co-founder and head distiller, will share ways to decode whiskey and spirits, followed by a tour of their distillery and the basics of how to make spirits: ingredients, fermentation, distillation, and aging. Along the way, she’ll introduce you to some of their motorcycles in their tasting room. Finally, she’ll share how to make a simple Maple Old Fashioned from home. The Made in NYC Learning offers critical services and skill-building to New York City’s manufacturers and makers to help them build capacity and stay resilient. Over 40+ free workshops and creative services are offered every year providing support on product photography, digital marketing, workplace mindfulness and more. Join Made in NYC partners SBIDC, BOCnet and The Working World to learn about how manufacturers can can sell their business to their employees. The Equitable Industrial Development (EqID) Initiative is a new City-supported partnership with local service providers that will help small business owners explore and execute the sale of their business to employees. Especially in the midst of the pandemic, employee ownership could help long-time business owners to retire while preserving critical jobs and stabilizing our communities—providing workers an opportunity to grow their wealth and building resilience against future economic challenges.
BIPOC women have played a vital role in shaping New York City’s fashion industry, whose long and storied history is rooted in the Garment District and spans all five boroughs. With the industry at a crossroads, we are facing critical questions about the future of the workforce. This panel will focus on the pathways towards a more equitable fashion industry, looking at innovative worker-ownership models and the role of homemaking before, during and post the COVID-19 pandemic.

Join us for a panel discussion with three Pratt Institute alumni who have become leaders in New York City’s manufacturing community, moderated by Pratt Institute President Frances Bronet. Panelists will share their journeys going from students in the classroom to leaders of their own creative businesses.
COVID-19 has illuminated the fragility of our modern food supply chains. Conventional agriculture and advancements in distribution and logistics have increased the vulnerability of our food systems, which can quickly crumble with one disruption in production and fulfillment. The need for hyperlocal, regenerative food systems here in New York is clearer than ever. Learn how the city’s food producers and advocates responded to our current crisis with creative solutions, as well as what to expect moving forward.

Adaptation
Learn about how New York’s makers and manufacturers in New York City are advancing inclusion of people with disabilities through adaptive design and inclusive employment practices. We will explore adaptive design with the Adaptive Design Association, a nonprofit organization that creates adaptations of expensive and non-custom commercial products for people with disabilities; Adapt Ability, a new nonprofit that specializes in affordable solutions for adaptive bicycling; and will take a behind-the-scenes look at Undercare’s adaptive clothing for people with mobility challenges with CEO and Founder Susanne Leary Shoemaker. In celebration of Disability Employment Awareness Month, we will also be joined by Karen Waltuck, JobPath’s Director of the Consortium of Customized Employment, to learn how a network of 13 agencies are working together with manufacturers and other businesses through the customized employment strategy that is key to engaging skilled people with developmental disabilities as long-term employees. This program will be hosted by Turnstile Tours’ President Cindy VandenBosch who is an accessibility professional in the museum and tourism fields.
This spring, the city’s manufacturing community rapidly pivoted away from pre-COVID day-to-day operations to produce PPE and help fellow New Yorkers endure an unprecedented crisis. This panel will highlight the manufacturers who rapidly mobilized to be a part of the solution, whether through new business models, production of masks, face shields, and hospital gowns, or food donations. We will amplify stories that demonstrate the critical role of manufacturing in New York City’s local economy.
